At All Saints Church, Christchurch we, along with all other Christian churches, worship Jesus Christ as our Lord, which simply means that we wish to do his will both in our lives and in our community. One thing is for sure, in Jesus you will not find a more faithful friend.
But that’s not all, Jesus Christ has overcome the very thing which separates us from God – our sin – by his death on the cross and resurrection from the grave.
Jesus isn’t just some guy who died 2000 years ago. He is alive and well today and loves us more than we could possibly imagine. He is able to forgive our sins, he prays for us, and he cares about what’s happening in our lives. Jesus also empowers us to live as he wants us to. This he is able to do through his Holy Spirit which has been given to every true believer. But the best way to get to know Jesus is to understand what the Bible says about him, and that includes what he said about himself.
All that we believe about Jesus is summed up in what’s called the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
*The word “catholic” in the Apostles’ Creed refers not to the Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
